Rescue Mission: A Curbed Chair Makeover Begins!

Rescue Mission: A Curbed Chair Makeover Begins!

The hubs and I were driving down our street on Sunday heading for little Tokyo when I saw this peeking out from behind a trash can. I exlaimed “AH! CHAIR! We need that chair!” and to my surprise, Tyler asked if I wanted to turn around to look at it. We took turns getting out of the car to check it out, and Tyler just walked it back to our apartment.

It is certainly in need of some TLC, but I have some to give. Funny thing is, I really want a chair in an yellow ochre velvet, but the state of this fabric is in such poor condition there will be no salvaging it. So I’ll have to hunt down a similar fabric to use for reupholstering. The wood appears to be a speckled laminate and is peeling and chipping, so I’ll probably be painting it, although I’d really love to have it be wood… I think I’d love to just restore this chair! Like a subtle update with upholstery tacs or something. I’m definitely going to get rid of this broken wicker, but I don’t know what to replace it with, or if I should replace it at all!  I’m a little nervous to try reupholstering by myself, especially tufted… but there are so many good tutorials out there. Jenny Komenda from Little Green Notebook has some great ones, and I have half a mind to send her a plea email if I get stuck… I’m also wondering if this particular job is best left to the professionals. I won’t be getting to this makeover until January, I’m sure, so any advice in the meantime is welcome!
